Appointments
Patients should bring their health card, a list of current medications, and their current prescription glasses. It’s also helpful to bring their insurance card, NIHB information, and sunglasses.
Initial appointments typically last between 2 to 3 hours, as they may include a comprehensive eye exam and discussions about medical history. Follow-up appointments are usually shorter.
Dilation is common during an eye exam to provide a better view of the retina and optic nerve. Dilation is almost always necessary; please assume you will be dilated for your exam and arrange for a ride home.
The exam will include a series of tests to assess vision, eye health, and potential issues. This may involve visual acuity tests, refraction assessments, and examinations of the eye's internal structures.
Procedures
While most procedures are safe, all medical treatments carry some risks. The ophthalmologist will discuss any potential risks and benefits specific to your condition and treatment options.
Costs can vary based on the type of examination and whether additional tests are needed. Patients can expect an annual charge for diagnostic tests not covered by Manitoba Health around $150/annually. Additional costs can be associated with forms, private services for those not covered by public health, and premium cataract IOL’s.
Patients should contact the 911 or the Misericordia Hospital immediately if they experience unusual severe symptoms such as severe pain, vision changes, or swelling/bleeding in the eye. If symptoms are mild or uncomfortable, we encourage patients to contact the clinic for guidance and support.
